Training Pre-requisites

The college generally recommends that students start by studying Tai Chi Slow Form and/or Qi Gong, both of which require at least one year of classes and practice. After that, students may go on to study Tai Chi Fast Form, Tai Chi Sword, Pushing Hands, and other advanced topics.

The straight sword forms are the recommended starting point for all weapons. This form requires greater flexibility and control. The main requirement is to learn to relax with the weapon and treat it as an extension of the arm. The straight sword style is soft and whiplike, flexible, controlled and fast. The sabre (broadsword), both single and double forms are stronger, heavier weapons and the forms reflect this. As with all Wu style forms, these forms are very precise with clear and accurate movements. The spear forms are also strong and quite rare in Tai Chi today.
